1.4 Flinders Urban Village
A vibrant urban centre of University, health, business and residential activity in Southern Adelaide
Flinders University have plans for a $2 bn urban village development at its Bedford Park campus.
A key catalyst for the development is the Flinders Link rail project which will extend the existing Tonlsey train line by 650 metres to the University’s current sports fields on Sturt Road. This will link the Bedford Park campus and medical centre with Tonsley Innovation precinct and beyond to the city. The rail line will be flanked by a pedestrian and cycle path extending connectivity to all. This increased connectivity can be used to leverage Tonsley into a large, vibrant and attractive innovation precinct. It is planned that shops, eateries and accommodation will be built by the rail station which will ensure the urban village improves liveability for those in the South.
The Flinders Village will transform the station precinct into an urbanised centre of activity, amenity and opportunity, which will benefit not only local communities but the State as a whole. It is envisaged that the creation of such an urbanised campus environment will deliver 3,400 additional international students and more than $150m in additional annual export earnings. It would also generate up to 5,000 new jobs, with $2bn regional economic benefit.
This project delivers on the State’s Strategic and Economic Priorities and will complement the vision of Southern Adelaide. It will increase prosperity of the region by increasing jobs and opportunities for local people and will ensure the region is generally more liveable and engaged.
